dimple and akhilesh yadavMay 26,Luknow: Dimple Yadav, wife of Samajwadi Party’s state president and CM Akhilesh Yadav, will contest the Kannauj Lok Sabha by-election on june 24 as a the party’s candidate.

The Samajwadi Party’s Parliamentary Board meeting held on Friday to discuss the preparations for the Kannauj Lok Sabha bypolls, and it concluded after a majority of the members present nominated the party national president Mulayam Singh Yadav and state president Akhilesh Yadav to take the final call in deciding the candidate for Kannauj bypoll.

Dimple had contested the Firozabad by-election in 2009, but lost to Congress candidate Raj Babbar. That defeat led to Mulayam Singh Yadav and Amar Singh parting ways.

Akhilesh Yadav had contested from the Firozabad and Kannauj in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls and won from both the place. His victory did not come as a surprise because both Kannauj and Firozabad have been a part of the Yadav’s traditional stronghold. Subsequently, Akhilesh gave up the Firozabad seat to retain Kannauj and in the bypolls that followed his wife Dimple lost the polls. Earlier this month, Akhilesh resigned from Kannauj seat after being nominated as a member of the UP legislative council by the party after becoming UP CM.

Ensuring victory at Kannauj is crucial for Akhilesh Yadav who took over as the state chief minister barely two months back and may test his popularity. The Congress party may likely not field its candidate and extend support to the Samajwadi Party nominee.
