Manmohan singh and Anna HazareMay 30, New Delhi: Team Anna’s allegation of corruption against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in coal block allotments, hasn’t gone down well with the leader. Reacting to the allegation, an emotional PM hit back saying he would give up public life if charges levied by the activists were proved.

“It is unfortunate that irresponsible allegations relating to irregularities in allocation of coal blocks are being made without confirming facts… I will give up my public life if allegations are proved against me. My long public career as finance minister, as leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha and now as prime minister has been an open book,” Singh told reporters on his way back from Myanmar.

Team Anna has demanded that the PM sanction a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by July 24 to study the charges hurtled by them against him and other ministers.  They have warned of an indefinite hunger strike if their request is not accepted.

“If the Prime Minister is serious about what he said, he should accept the offer of a special investigation team for probing the allegations we have made and 14 other ministers,” said Team anna member Prashant Bhushan.

“We can’t trust CBI with this probe, and in absence of Lokpal, we have suggested the committee,” he said.

On his comment of comparing prime minister to Shikhandi, he said: “I said that the Prime Minister’s clean image is being used as a shield”.

His colleague Arvind Kejriwal also supported Bhushan by saying,”He never called the Prime Minister Shikhandi, he just said the prime minister was being used as a shield, the way Shikhandi was used”.
