Amarnath Yathra: 16 devotees killed in truck accident.

amarnath-yatraJuly 27, Srinagar: Sixteen Amarnath pilgrims killed on Thursday after the truck they were travelling has fallen into a gorge near Mansar in Samba district of Jammu. Sixteen others were said to be injured in the accident. They were taken to a local hospital.

There were 34 devotees in the truck who were engaged in setting a community kitchen at Amarnath, was returning back when it skidded off the road and rolled down deep into the gorge near Zamoorha Morh in Mansar belt of Samba district, about 50 kilometres from Jammu city at 11:30 pm on Thursday, police said.

Army, Police and paramilitary forces rushed to the accident site after receiving information and started rescue attempts. They said nine pilgrims died on the spot and seven others succumbed to their injuries on the way to the hospital. Another 16 injured were taken to the Government Medical College in Jammu.

This is the second major incident involving pilgrims returning from the Amarnath cave this month.

On 14 July, 15 pilgrims were killed when a passenger bus returning from the pilgrimage plunged into a gorge near Ramban on a mountain road.
