Jalandhar: 5-day-old baby dies in hospital as parents fail to pay Rs 200

July 26, Jalandhar: In a gruesome incident that has put humanity to shame, a five-days-old girl child died at a government hospital in Jalandhar after doctors removed her from the incubator because her parents could not pay Rs 200.

According to reports, the baby, who was born on July 20 at the Jalandhar Civil Hospital, was removed from the incubator all because girl’s parents failed to pay electricity charges as advanced amount.

As per the couple, the baby was born premature and was in the incubator already. A senior doctor then told them the baby would need to be on it for another day. After that, they were told about depositing the money.

“We were told that electricity bill for a day for ventilator comes out to be Rs. 25 a day and I will have to pay as much. I told them I do not have that much money and requested them to place the baby on ventilator but they did not do it,” says the baby’s father Sanjeev Kumar, a daily wage worker.

He also alleged that the glucose drip was also removed from the baby for non payment of dues.

The child’s mother Sunita is inconsolable. “They killed my child,” she said.

The hospital in its defence says the baby was born premature and had very little chances of survival.

Hospital CMO says that he can’t believe that an incident like this can happen. He has asked the baby’s father to submit a complaint and then he will look into the matter.
