mayawati-statue-vandalisedJuly 27, Lucknow: Three people have been arrested for damaging the statue of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BSP chief Mayawati. The statue was located in the famous Ambedkar Park in Gomti Nagar.

It was a tense day for the capital of Uttar Pradesh after the four-foot-high statue was destroyed by vandals. The head and hands were removed, so was the replica of the large purse that Mayawati is rarely seen without. Three persons have been detained in connection with the incident, the police said.

When the attack on the statue was reported, Mayawati appealed to her party workers not to retaliate. Pamphlets left behind at the damaged statue referred to a group called the UP Navnirman Sena.

The Navnirman Sena gave an idea of its audacity by video-taping the entire vandalism and sent the footage to news channels and journalists. In fact, the Sena chief Amit Agarwal alias Amit Jaani had addressed a press conference just an hour ago and warned that if the Akhilesh Yadav government did not start removing Mayawati’s statues within 72 hours, the Sena would raze them.

Before fleeing the spot, the Sena men left behind their pamphlets claiming responsibility for the act. The pamphlet alleges that Mayawati had indulged in large-scale corruption and even got several honest people killed to cover up her scams.

The statue was placed outside the Ambedkar Memorial constructed by Mayawati as a tribute to Dalit leaders including herself and her mentor, Kanshi Ram.

The statues that Mayawati commissioned were widely criticised during her term in office – she was also taken to court to explain why taxpayers were funding her replicas.

“Three persons, including Alok Srivastava, his son Arpit Srivastava and an executive of a PR agency, Vishal Mishra, have been taken into custody,” Sharma said, adding that an FIR has been lodged.

He said that information has been received regarding the organisation and it’s office-bearers and they would be arrested soon.

“Sena’s state president Amit Jaani hails from Meerut and has seven criminal cases against him, including two attempt to murder cases,” he said.

The statue was created for another memorial in Lucknow – the Kanshi Ram Green Eco Garden – but was never installed. Any way hours after it was broken, UP government announced a new one, just like it, will be installed in Lucknow.
