Teenage girl molested by mob in Guwahati, Four persons arrested so far.

guwahati-girl-molestationJuly 13, Guwahati: Four persons have been arrested on charges of molesting a girl in Christianbasti locality along the busy Guwahati-Shillong road, close to the Dispur capital complex on Monday night.

The teenaged girl was pulled by her hair, lifted up, thrown down, beaten up, thrashed, molested, groped, slapped and stripped in full public view for 30 minutes on Monday night at a busy road near the Christian Basti area in Guwahati by a mob of around 20 men. The girl was returning home after a party at a city bar. While the Assam Police has identified seven men from the video footage that has gone viral on the Internet, it has only managed to arrest three so far.

“The Four youths were arrested in connection with the molestation case which happened in front of a bar on Guwahati-Shillong Road on July 10,” Superintendent of Police Apurba Jyoti Barua said.

“We are investigating the case. As of now our immediate priority is to identify and arrest the culprits. There could be some 10-12 who were actually involved in the crime while others were bystanders,” he added.

However, according to reports, scores of bystanders just stood around and some even filmed the incidents (others posed and grinned for the camera, as the girl’s modesty was being outraged by a mob of men (the men are being numbered in the dozens) who were tearing off her clothes and groping her indiscriminately.

The arrested includes a contractual employee of Amtron, Assam government’s IT agency, Amarjyoti Kalita.

Kalita, who had also acted in an Assamese serial where he played the role of a policeman, has since been dismissed from service.

Two others who were arrested are Dhananjoy Basfor, a sweeper and Bubul Das a local tradesman, the SP said.

The accused were charged with unlawful assembly, obscene act and assault on a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty, following a written complaint filed by the girl’s mother.

The accused were framed under Sec 341 (wrongful restraint) 143 (unlawful assembly), 294 (obscene act), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (assault or criminal force on a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty) of IPC following a written complaint filed by girl’s mother.
