HC dismisses company director plea in drugs seizure case

May 18 (PTI) Mumbai: A Director of a company, who faced prosecution for seizure of cocaine from a consignment exported by his firm, has received a setback with the Bombay High Court dismissing his petition challenging the proceedings launched by Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to put him on trial.

The Court held the petitioner’s plea that he was merely a professional director of the firm was without merits.

Umesh Bangur, Chartered Accountant and Director of OPM International Ltd, had challenged proceedings on two grounds — first that he was merely a professional director of the company with no active role in the operations and second that NCB had no jurisdiction to seize the drugs in the high seas as Customs was the competent authority in this regard.
