May 22, Andhra Pradesh: At least 16 people have been killed and several others injured in the Hampi express accident in Andhra Pradesh.
The trail collided with a goods train near Penneconda in Andhra Pradesh early on Tuesday morning in its way from Hubli to Bangalore. The death toll has risen to 16 and over 25 were injured in the collision, according to a railway spokesperson. The accident happened at around 3:45 am on Tuesday.
The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals.
The accident has caused delays to several Bangalore-bound trains travelling through the state. Trains running on Mumbai-Bangalore, Machilipatnam-Yeshwantpur, and Bhagalpur-Yeshwantpur lines have been delayed by at least 3 hours.
Among the express trains, Secunderabad - Bangalore Express and Delhi to Bangalore Rajdhani Express are reported to be running late.
Two bogies of Hampi Express derailed after the collision. Several people are still trapped inside the mangled bogies of the train.
Rescue operations are underway to rescue the trapped passengers. Gas cutters are being used to cut the mangled coaches.
Anil Saxena, railway PRO, said that three coaches of Hampi Express have been damaged. While two of them are second class general bogies , the third is the luggage-cum-guard coach.
The PRO claimed that all the passengers from the first coach have been rescued.
“The reason of the accident is yet to be ascertained but prima facie it seems that the driver of Hampi Express overshot the signal,” the spokesperson said, adding senior railway officials have rushed to the spot.
