French Open: Mahesh Bhupati wins mixed doubles with Sania Mirza

June 8, Paris: Mahesh Bhupathi has the unique record of winning all his eight Grand Slam mixed doubles titles with seven different partners and in straight sets. It’s for the first time that Mahesh Bhupathi has won two Grand Slam titles with the same partner - Sania Mirza.

Mahesh Bhupathi celebrated his 38th birthday in style as he and Sania Mirza captured their second mixed doubles title together after beating Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Santiago Gozalez 7-6, 6-1 in the French Open final on Thursday.

Mirza and Bhupathi fought back from a break down in the opening set to trounce the Polish-Mexican partnership after Jans-Ignacik smacked a backhand wide on match point.

Seventh seeds Sania and Bhupathi, had won the 2009 Australia Open and it is their first Grand Slam title since then. Sania had become first woman tennis player from India to win a Grand Slam with that Australian Open trophy.

A giggling Mirza passed on the rectangular runners-up tray to Gozalez before the red-faced French Open official handed the right trophy to the Indian duo.
