Finally Pinky Pramanik got bail, says she’s being framed.
July 11, Kolkata: Former Asiad Gold medallist athlete Pinki Pramanik accused of raping a woman, was released from Dum Dum Central Correctional Home in Kolkata on Wednesday. A Barasat court had on Tuesday granted the athlete bail after spending 25 days in prison.
However, she could not walk free as the bail papers could not be processed at Dumdum Central jail where she is lodged.
Speaking to reporters after her release from the Dum Dum Central Jail, Pramanik said she was falsely implicated in the case. Pramanik was arrested on Jun 14 after she was accused of being a male by her live-in partner, a 30-year-old estranged woman who also alleged that she was raped by Pramanik. Asked whether she would file a defamation case, Pramanik said she would consult her lawyer on this matter.
Ms Pramanik described the case against her as “a conspiracy” and vowed to clear her name.
She was arrested in West Bengal state last month after a complaint from her live-in partner, who is a woman. Ms Pramanik won several medals for India.
As she left jail on Wednesday morning, her father Durga Charan Pramanik was there to receive her along with former sportswoman-turned-politician Jyotirmoyee Sikdar.
In the past few weeks, activists and human rights groups have protested against the “mistreatment” of Ms Pramanik after she was escorted by male police and forced to undergo several inconclusive gender tests. A mobile phone video of Ms Pramanik undergoing the tests has allegedly been posted on the internet.
Ms Pramanik won gold in the 4x400m relay in the 2006 Doha Asian Games and a silver in the same event at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. She also won three gold medals in the 2006 South Asian Federation (SAF) Games in Colombo when she won the 400m, 800m and 4x400m relay events.
